Overview
This role is for a General Counsel to lead the legal function of a high-growth AI-powered energy intelligence platform company. The position involves partnering closely with the CEO and Board to support business growth, enable sales, lead M&A integration, and oversee compliance and employee relations. The organization is open to fully remote candidates, with a preference for those located in Washington, DC, New York, or Boston.
Responsibilities
Revenue & Sales Enablement
- Collaborate with Sales and Product teams to streamline the "Lead-to-Cash" process, prioritizing commercial outcomes.
- Lead negotiations for complex SaaS contracts, IP licensing, and technology transactions.
- Develop standardized contract playbooks and self-service legal tools to accelerate sales cycles.
M&A Integration & Corporate Governance
- Provide legal support for fundraising rounds, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships.
- Lead post-acquisition legal harmonization, including entity rationalization and IP portfolio consolidation.
- Serve as Corporate Secretary and primary Board liaison, advising on governance, ethics, and fiduciary duties.
- Prepare the company for potential capital events such as IPO readiness or strategic divestitures.
Employee Relations & Human Capital
- Advise the People Team on sensitive employee relations matters, including executive compensation and performance management.
- Oversee integration of employee policies and handbooks post-acquisition to ensure cultural alignment and legal compliance.
- Manage workplace dispute resolution and labor audit risks.
Enterprise Risk & Compliance
- Direct compliance efforts related to data privacy (GDPR/CCPA), cybersecurity, and industry-specific regulations.
- Oversee active litigation and manage outside counsel to optimize legal spend.
Requirements
- Minimum 15 years of legal experience, including significant in-house counsel or top law firm experience.
- Proven success as a General Counsel or senior legal leader in a high-growth SaaS or technology environment.
- Experience leading legal work streams through full acquisition and integration lifecycles.
- Strong commercial mindset with ability to provide practical, actionable legal advice.
- Deep knowledge of employment law and managing human capital during organizational change.
- Experience managing legal operations for companies with significant international presence, including coordination across multiple time zones.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree with excellent academic credentials.
- Active membership in good standing with a state bar where the company conducts business.
- Strong client-service orientation, ability to manage competing deadlines independently, and high professional ethics.

- Experience in energy regulation or utility sectors.
- Background in high-growth, venture-funded SaaS startups.
- Demonstrated ability to assess risk with a flexible tolerance aligned to business objectives.
- Experience leading globally distributed legal teams.
- Proven track record in legal due diligence and execution of mergers and acquisitions.
Compensation & Benefits
- Target annual salary range: $230,000 - $350,000, determined by skills, experience, and location.
