Overview
This role is positioned at the intersection of intellectual property law, enterprise technology, AI governance, and data security. It supports a Fortune 100 insurer operating across all 50 states and multiple international jurisdictions. The position offers high visibility and impact, reporting directly to the Chief Technology Counsel.
Typical starting salary: $179,801 - $218,000
Responsibilities
- Negotiate and draft complex technology agreements including software licenses, SaaS contracts, API access agreements, data licenses, and open-source compliance frameworks
- Advise on software license scope and restrictions related to AI and automation initiatives across core insurance platforms
- Review vendor contracts against negotiation playbooks; identify and escalate high-risk deviations
- Provide practical, commercial legal counsel on trademark, marketing, and intellectual property strategy matters
- Anticipate emerging legal issues and lead proactive risk mitigation within the technology practice
- Direct and review work performed by law clerks and paralegals as needed
- Serve as legal counsel to the Responsible AI Committee, advising on pilot parameters, excluded use cases, access controls, and written determinations for AI/ML deployments
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Minimum of six years of experience as a practicing attorney
- Experience in technology transactions and intellectual property law
- Strong commercial negotiation skills
- Excellent written and oral communication abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities independently
- In-house legal experience within a regulated industry such as insurance, financial services, or healthcare
- Experience with AI/ML governance or responsible AI advisory
- Familiarity with open-source licensing frameworks (e.g., GPL, Apache, MIT)
- Multi-jurisdictional technology regulatory experience
- Background in data privacy law, including CCPA, GDPR, and state insurance data regulations
- Technical undergraduate degree or background in software/engineering preferred
