Overview

An organization is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in California courts, focusing on first party insurance defense. This role is part of the Staff Counsel team with locations in San Francisco, Sacramento, Concord, San Diego, and Los Angeles. The position offers remote work flexibility.

Responsibilities

  • Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
  • Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
  • Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery processes, including depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
  • Defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearings as applicable

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Admission to and good standing with the California Bar
  • 2-6+ years of litigation experience related to insurance defense and/or personal injury
  • Ability to travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
  • Strong written communication skills to document files clearly and professionally
  • Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Capacity to learn and apply extensive technical and procedural information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in civil litigation
  • Insurance defense-related litigation experience
  • Professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in written correspondence

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $112,750.00 - $186,550.00
  • Salary offer depends on role scope, candidate experience, education, work location, and market factors
