Overview

An organization is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in Texas courts and handle first-party insurance defense matters. This position is based with the Staff Counsel team located in Houston, Texas, and offers a remote work option within commutable distance to the office.

Responsibilities

  • Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
  • Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
  • Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
  • Defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearings as applicable

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree required
  • Admission to and good standing with the Texas Bar required
  • 2 to 6+ years of litigation experience in insurance defense, personal injury, or related fields
  • Ability to travel as needed for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
  • Strong written communication skills to document files clearly and professionally
  • Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Capacity to learn and apply extensive technical and procedural information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in civil litigation
  • Insurance defense-related litigation experience
  • Professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in written correspondence

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $112,750.00 - $175,275.00
  • Final salary offer depends on role scope, candidate experience, education, location, and market factors
