Overview
An applied AI technology organization is seeking its first Commercial Counsel to establish and lead the legal function focused on commercial contracting. This role involves structuring, negotiating, and scaling critical enterprise and strategic partnerships in a fast-paced environment at the forefront of AI and enterprise transformation.
Responsibilities
- Architect the commercial contracting function from the ground up, designing systems, standards, and frameworks for enterprise and partner agreements at scale
- Lead end-to-end negotiations on high-impact deals with customers and strategic partners
- Develop and implement scalable templates, playbooks, and workflows to improve deal execution speed, consistency, and quality
- Collaborate closely with Founders, Sales, Product, and Finance teams to proactively unblock deals and influence commercial strategy
- Provide clear, pragmatic legal and regulatory guidance that balances speed with risk
- Enhance tooling, processes, and standards to support rapid and sustainable growth
Requirements
- J.D. from an accredited law school with active bar admission
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in commercial contracting and corporate legal work
- Proven success leading complex, high-value negotiations from start to finish
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate legal concepts into clear business terms
- Strong operational mindset, comfortable working in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
- Demonstrated ability to build scalable legal systems rather than only managing individual transactions
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house legal experience at a high-growth technology company
- Deep knowledge of SaaS, enterprise, platform, or partner agreements
- Experience with legal technology, contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems, or automation tools
- Familiarity with product-related legal areas such as data privacy, intellectual property, and compliance
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range: $180,000 to $250,000, depending on experience, location, and level
