Overview

A legal counsel position is available to defend lawsuits filed in California courts, focusing on first-party insurance defense. This role is part of the Staff Counsel team with locations in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco. The position offers remote work flexibility.

Responsibilities

  • Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
  • Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
  • Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery processes
  • Conduct depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
  • Defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearings as applicable

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Admission to and good standing with the California Bar
  • Minimum of 7 years of litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury
  • Ability to travel as needed for trials, hearings, depositions, meetings, and conferences
  • Strong written communication skills to document files clearly and professionally
  • Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and manage multiple priorities
  • Capacity to learn and apply extensive technical and procedural information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in civil litigation
  • Insurance defense-related litigation experience
  • Professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in written correspondence

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $127,100.00 - $210,125.00
  • Salary offer depends on role scope, experience, education, location, and market factors
