Overview
A legal counsel position is available to defend lawsuits filed in California courts, focusing on first-party insurance defense. This role is part of the Staff Counsel team with locations in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco. The position offers remote work flexibility.
Responsibilities
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
- Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
- Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery processes
- Conduct depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
- Defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearings as applicable
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree
- Admission to and good standing with the California Bar
- Minimum of 7 years of litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury
- Ability to travel as needed for trials, hearings, depositions, meetings, and conferences
- Strong written communication skills to document files clearly and professionally
- Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and manage multiple priorities
- Capacity to learn and apply extensive technical and procedural information
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in civil litigation
- Insurance defense-related litigation experience
- Professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in written correspondence
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary range: $127,100.00 - $210,125.00
- Salary offer depends on role scope, experience, education, location, and market factors
