Freelance Legal Translators, Transcribers, and Interpreters

Overview

This freelance contractor role involves providing translation, transcription, and interpreting services between English and one or more of the following languages: Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Italian, Lithuanian, Portuguese, or Romanian. The work includes handling documents and audio related to law enforcement and legal subjects.

Location

• Remote work available for translation and transcription tasks
• Remote or onsite interpreting positions in Washington, DC; New York City, NY; Miami, FL; Houston, TX; Dallas, TX; San Francisco, CA

Compensation

• Translation: $0.10 - $0.20 per English word
• Transcription: $25.00 - $50.00 per hour
• Interpreting: $55.00 - $120.00 per hour

Responsibilities

• Accurately translate documents involving law enforcement and legal topics
• Transcribe audio files and translate them into the target language
• Communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing
• Translate according to designated style and quality standards
• Use domain-specific terminology appropriately
• Review the quality of other translators’ work as needed
• Interpret accurately while preserving tone and register, adhering to the code of ethics

Basic Qualifications

• Proficiency in translating between English and a foreign language
• Proficiency in interpreting between English and a foreign language
• Experience in audio transcription
• Professional experience as a translator, editor, transcriber, interpreter, journalist, writer, or legal professional
• Familiarity with legal terminology
• Willingness to undergo a U.S. government background check
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• U.S. citizenship with residence in the U.S.; dual citizenship permitted

Preferred Qualifications

• Law degree, paralegal certificate, or court interpreting experience
• Experience with editing, audio transcription, or interpreting
• Security clearance

Education

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Reporting

This position reports to the Project Manager.
