Associate Counsel - West Orange, NJ (Remote)

Overview

An organization is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in New Jersey courts and handle other first-party insurance defense matters. This position is part of the Staff Counsel team located in West Orange, NJ, and offers a remote work option.

Responsibilities

• Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
• Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
• Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
• Defend assigned matters by trial or dispositive hearing as applicable

Requirements

• 2 to 6+ years of litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury
• Juris Doctor degree
• Admission to and good standing with the New Jersey Bar
• Must maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) where applicable
• Ability to travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
• Strong written communication skills to document files clearly and professionally
• Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and demonstrate strong organizational, priority-setting, and multitasking skills
• Capacity to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information

Preferred Qualifications

• Civil litigation experience
• Insurance defense-related litigation experience
• Professional communication skills in person, via telephone, and written correspondence/email

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual salary range: $118,900.00 - $186,550.00
• Final salary offer depends on role scope, candidate experience, education, training, work location, and market considerations
