Claims Counsel

Overview

The organization is seeking an internal Claims Counsel to support the claims team’s legal and coverage needs. This role involves applying legal expertise to complex auto claims matters, delivering clear insurance coverage opinions, and helping shape operational policies, procedures, and training.

You will report to a Managing Attorney, who reports to the Chief Claims Officer.

Responsibilities

• Apply experienced legal insight to private passenger automobile claims, including contract interpretation, multi-state tort law, civil procedure, and litigation matters.
• Research, draft, and communicate insurance coverage opinions.
• Interface with claims management, corporate legal, and regulatory professionals regarding claims-related issues.
• Support claims management with research and analysis of multi-state tort and insurance coverage laws to help establish operational policies, procedures, and training programs.
• Present in-person training sessions to adjuster teams and/or management on a variety of legal topics.
• Draft form letters and releases.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) with an active license to practice law.
• 5+ years of relevant experience.
• First-chair (jury trial) insurance defense litigation experience.
• Technical understanding of property/casualty insurance principles.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Intellectual curiosity and strong critical thinking.
• Ability to analyze risk and make flexible, concise decisions.
• Ability to build collaborative working relationships in a fast-paced environment focused on getting things done.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary Range: $140,000 - $155,000 (STI & LTI Eligible)

• Work location flexibility across the United States.
• Headquarters in Columbus.
