Overview
This role involves providing comprehensive, responsive, and timely legal advice and training to Claims, Underwriting, and Market Management teams on all insurance lines with limited supervision. The position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure proactive and compliant performance of company objectives.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice on claims handling procedures to prevent insurance bad faith claims related to coverage and settlement of claims.
- Address coverage issues by preparing reservations, denials, or other correspondence for Claims as needed.
- Communicate effectively with clients, business partners, and attorneys regarding significant developments and potential litigation.
- Consult with business units on legal issues and implications of potential business decisions, offering strategies and solutions.
- Review insurance policies and provide coverage analysis.
- Advise Underwriting on potential rescission or reformation actions and prepare related correspondence.
- Monitor and assist outside counsel in coverage-related litigation.
- Support Claims and Underwriting in responding to subpoenas and other legal requests.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-approved law school.
- Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 5-8 years of experience as a coverage attorney.
- Preferred experience in professional liability issues, including lawyers and medical professional liability, and defense of such matters.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Westlaw.
- Strong time management, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong legal research and analysis capabilities.
- Business acumen with the ability to analyze legal issues from a business perspective.
- Ability to manage multiple varied legal issues simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective prioritization skills in high-urgency settings.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual gross base salary range: $100,000 to $145,000, depending on qualifications, skills, and competencies.
