Special Counsel, Payments

Overview

A leading organization in the Business Services sector is seeking a Special Counsel, Payments to join their team. This role involves driving significant impact across key initiatives by partnering cross-functionally to deliver measurable outcomes. The position offers the opportunity to influence both strategy and execution within a high-growth environment.

Location: Remote (U.S. based candidates only; no visa sponsorship available)

Compensation: $200,000 – $262,500 annually

Responsibilities

• Serve as a legal partner to Product, Compliance, and Engineering teams for payments-related offerings
• Act as a strategic advisor for the launch and scaling of payments products and programs internationally
• Assess regulatory requirements for product expansion into new jurisdictions and provide clear compliance guidance
• Offer practical legal advice on global payments regulations, including consumer protection and financial reporting
• Review marketing materials to ensure alignment with legal and internal compliance standards

Requirements

• 7+ years of legal experience focusing on payments, blockchain, and financial services
• Expertise in U.S. federal and state payments laws, including money transmission and AML/BSA regulations
• Experience advising product and engineering teams on legal compliance for payment networks
• J.D. or equivalent degree with active U.S. state bar membership

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with global product launches and navigating compliance in fintech environments
• Familiarity with consumer protection laws, global banking partnerships, crypto, emerging financial technologies, blockchain technology
• Knowledge of regulatory compliance software, legal research platforms, payment processing systems, CRM tools, and contract management systems
