Overview

This role is responsible for independently drafting and reviewing standard immigration applications, motions, briefs, and client communications, while managing assigned portions of immigration matters. The attorney supports clients in obtaining required documents and staying united with their families through accurate legal work, effective client communication, and routine hearing coverage with supervision.

The Sr Staff Attorney exercises greater independence than an Operations Staff Attorney and performs routine work that may require limited substantive edits, while seeking direction on complex or non-standard issues.

Responsibilities

  • Support hiring by assessing legal knowledge, drafting skills, and suitability for staff attorney roles.
  • Lead technical onboarding and training to build proficiency in immigration case processes, legal review standards, and firm procedures.
  • Perform case shadowing and review attorney work products to identify development needs; provide timely, specific feedback to strengthen legal analysis, accuracy, professional judgment, and independent execution of routine assignments.
  • Serve as a primary resource for staff attorney questions and routine legal issues; clarify legal guidance, provide feedback, and escalate complex, novel, or high-risk matters to supervising counsel with supporting analysis and recommended next steps.
  • Lead daily case and workflow huddles to communicate priorities, review progress toward task goals, and identify obstacles; coordinate follow-up to support timely completion while maintaining legal quality and client service standards.
  • Draft, review, and update legal procedures, training materials, and review resources to reflect approved practices and changes in immigration requirements; recommend improvements and obtain appropriate approval before implementation.
  • Take ownership of assigned escalations, corrections, and deadline-sensitive cases; assess underlying issues, coordinate corrective action, and complete required legal work within established timelines, seeking supervisory guidance when matters exceed scope.
  • Research immigration statutes, regulations, agency guidance, and relevant decisions; translate findings into practical guidance and share relevant updates with staff attorneys and supervising counsel.
  • Serve as attorney of record on assigned immigration matters pursuant to Form G-28 for USCIS matters or Form E-28 for immigration court matters, as applicable; maintain familiarity with case status, material legal issues, and required filings.
  • Develop and recommend legal strategies for assigned USCIS matters and cases pending in immigration court by analyzing facts, evidence, and available legal options; implement approved strategies and obtain supervising counsel’s direction and approval for non-standard, complex, or high-risk decisions.
  • Independently draft and review standard immigration applications, responses to Requests for Evidence, appeals, and court filings using established legal guidance; provide substantive edits and obtain supervisory review for complex or unfamiliar issues.
  • Evaluate filings and supporting evidence for accuracy, completeness, consistency, legal sufficiency, and alignment with approved case strategy; identify deficiencies, assess potential impact, and ensure required revisions are addressed before submission.
  • Coordinate corrections and requests for additional information with attorneys, paralegals, and support staff; provide clear direction on required changes, track outstanding items, and verify that attorney reviews and required actions are completed before filing.
  • Communicate with clients, generally through an interpreter, to explain case status, address legal questions within assigned scope, clarify next steps, and obtain relevant information; document material communications and escalate concerns requiring additional legal review.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-approved law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with a state bar.
  • 1–3 years of post-J.D. legal experience in immigration law, with demonstrated proficiency in legal drafting, document review, and client communication.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing immigration applications, supporting evidence, responses to Requests for Evidence, and related filings; humanitarian immigration experience preferred.
