Trial Attorney - Staff Counsel

Overview

This role involves representing insured clients by defending claims made under insurance policies. The position is open to candidates located in the East Bay, San Jose, or Sacramento areas and can be filled at either the Trial Attorney or Senior Trial Attorney level depending on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

Trial Attorney

• Represent insured clients and the insurer in defending claims, ensuring no conflict of interest between policyholders and the insurer.
• Manage a full caseload of minimally to moderately complex matters, including trial representation.
• Communicate and report to policyholders and claims associates regarding litigation progress, strategy, and case developments.
• Assist in preparing departmental forms such as pleadings, discovery documents, jury instructions, dispositive motions, and correspondence.

Senior Trial Attorney

• Perform all Trial Attorney duties.
• Handle a full caseload ranging from minimal to highly complex matters through trial.
• Manage pleadings, motion practice, depositions, written discovery, expert witness retention and discovery, dispositive motions, and trial preparation and presentation with minimal oversight.
• Conduct examinations under oath, sworn statements, and other non-litigated matters as necessary.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
• Minimum of 2 years of related legal experience.
• Experience taking and defending depositions, court appearances, and retaining expert witnesses.
• Valid and active license to practice law in the state of California.
• Strong interpersonal skills to effectively handle conflict and controversy.
• Ability to self-manage a full caseload with minimal daily supervision.
• Bilingual candidates are preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual salary range for Trial Attorney: $131,600 - $197,400, based on experience and qualifications.
• Annual salary range for Senior Trial Attorney: $159,120 - $238,800, based on experience and qualifications.
