Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify and address legal and compliance risks across Product, Marketing, Commercial Operations, Market Access/Reimbursement, Research & Development, People Ops, and Finance—anticipating issues rather than waiting to be asked
  • Independently identify gaps in existing policies and processes and drive build-out of compliance infrastructure

  • Advise on company contracts, including drafting, negotiating, reviewing, interpreting, and managing strategic, high-value contracts
  • Take ownership of legal questions in unfamiliar subject areas—research, collect business input, and drive to resolution with appropriate escalation
  • Partner with legal team members to develop and build legal and compliance infrastructure and program for lab services/life science organization

Requirements

  • Genuine interest and ability to learn new areas of law and business; proven track record of taking on projects in unfamiliar areas and driving them to completion
  • Ability to be highly resourceful, adaptable, creative, and nimble in a high-growth, fast-paced environment
  • Track record of taking on unfamiliar legal problems with minimal oversight and driving them to a positive result for the business
  • Comfortable operating with significant autonomy and ambiguity in a lean legal team, making judgment calls without a playbook
  • JD and licensed to practice law in one or more US jurisdictions
  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department, ideally with exposure to life science or health care organizations
  • Experience advising commercial leaders and colleagues on business strategies, product promotion, sales programs and transactions, and other commercial initiatives
  • Experience developing processes to comply with legal/regulatory requirements, drafting and implementing policies and procedures, and delivering employee training
  • Exposure to some combination of the following subject areas: commercial compliance, securities/corporate governance, contract drafting and negotiation, intellectual property, and labor and employment matters
  • Strong team-player with willingness to roll up sleeves and pitch in wherever needed
  • Strong leadership skills, including clear communication of effective legal solutions to leadership and colleagues in a collaborative yet consultative way that meets business objectives while appropriately mitigating risks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with some or all of the following:
    • Start-up, emerging high-growth company experience
    • Molecular diagnostics/genetic company or CLIA lab
