Overview

This Counsel role serves as a legal advisor embedded across the business, partnering with multiple departments to navigate legal and regulatory matters and support commercial decision-making.

Approximately 70% of the role focuses on business partnership and strategic initiative support, and approximately 30% focuses on commercial and vendor strategy.

Responsibilities

Business Partnership & Strategic Initiative Support (70%)

  • Provide legal guidance on a range of legal and regulatory matters, including data privacy, artificial intelligence deployment, and dispute resolution
  • Collaborate with departmental leadership to align legal strategy with broader commercial objectives and act as a connector between functional teams and the legal practice
  • Partner with legal operations leads to streamline workflows, optimize automated systems, refine guidance materials, and build scalable processes
  • Deliver practical, solution-oriented advice on day-to-day operational questions, focusing on risk mitigation while supporting growth

Commercial & Vendor Strategy (30%)

  • Draft, review, and negotiate technology agreements, vendor arrangements, professional services contracts, and strategic partnership agreements
  • Support third-party risk management by collaborating with finance, technology, and operations teams to structure vendor engagements and ensure compliance with regulatory standards

Requirements

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing
  • 4+ years of relevant legal experience spanning firm, in-house, or hybrid environments; 1+ years in-house experience is preferred
  • Experience in consumer financial services, fintech, mortgage lending, or a highly regulated consumer-facing industry strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience structuring, drafting, and negotiating commercial agreements and technology contracts (including NDAs, SOWs, DPAs, SaaS, vendor contracts, and MSAs)
  • Ability and desire to quickly ramp up on new subject areas, including AI, privacy, litigation, and legal operations
  • Business-first approach to law, including the ability to evaluate risk thoughtfully and enable business outcomes rather than acting as a veto point
  • Sound judgment and comfort communicating directly with senior leadership
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, accessible language
  • Comfort with ambiguity, strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and a collaborative working style in a fast-paced environment
