Overview
This role builds and runs the legal function as the first dedicated in-house lawyer for a high-growth developer platform focused on real-time voice and media infrastructure.
You will own core legal work end to end—commercial contracting, privacy and data protection, open source/IP considerations, and corporate governance—while helping the business move faster by turning complex issues into practical, timely decisions.
Responsibilities
- Commercial contracting (end to end): Own customer MSAs, order forms, DPAs, BAAs, vendor agreements, and NDAs; develop playbooks and templates to help the GTM team move quickly.
- Privacy and data protection: Stand up and run privacy and data-protection programs for GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and HIPAA.
- Business partnership: Serve as the legal partner to Sales, Finance, Product, and Engineering to help deals close and products ship on the right side of the risk line.
- Corporate and governance: Handle board consents, equity mechanics, and entity/cap-table hygiene alongside Finance.
- Company-specific legal posture: Set strategy and guidance for open-source licensing and IP, AI governance, and telecom/SIP regulatory questions.
- Outside counsel management: Bring matters in-house or route to external counsel as appropriate, while keeping legal spend in check.
- Structure and enablement: Bring structure to ambiguity by writing playbooks that enable self-service by others.
Requirements
- Experience as the first (or one of the first) in-house lawyer at a high-growth tech company, or senior commercial counsel ready to own a function.
- Deep commercial contracts experience (enterprise, usage-based, and data-heavy) with judgment to move quickly on risk.
- Privacy and data protection fluency: GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and ideally HIPAA.
- Ability to operate as a builder and operator: comfortable working as a team of one, writing the playbook, and driving decisions with practical guidance.
- Technically curious enough to understand how the product, data, and open source actually work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Open-source licensing/IP experience, or background in developer infrastructure, real-time/WebRTC, telephony, or AI.
- Experience with corporate/governance/equity matters (including 409A and board consents) and exposure to M&A.
- Familiarity with AI governance (EU AI Act) and telecom regulation (E911, STIR/SHAKEN, TCPA).
- Strong contract review instincts and attention to detail.
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation range: $290K - $390K
- Competitive salary and equity package
- Health, dental, and vision benefits
- Flexible vacation policy
