Overview

Remote In-House Legal Counsel (US DTC Compliance)

  • Location: USA | Remote
  • Budget: Up to $6,000 USD/month

This is a US-based, advisory legal role focused on compliance across the DTC customer funnel, including advertising claims, marketing copy, email/SMS, checkout, subscriptions, and billing. The goal is to translate applicable law into concrete changes the business can implement—without relying on lengthy memos or vague risk identification.

Responsibilities

  • Review marketing claims and content before launch

    • Review ads, landing pages, product claims, influencer/UGC content, and paid creative.
    • Identify unsupported, exaggerated, health-related, efficacy, comparative, or otherwise high-risk claims and propose compliant alternatives.
  • Keep customer communications compliant

    • Review email, SMS, website, and checkout experiences against applicable marketing and consumer-protection requirements.
    • Validate real-world mechanics, including consent, opt-outs/unsubscribe handling, and required disclosures.
  • Own subscription and billing compliance

    • Audit the full subscription lifecycle, including:
      • Sign-up disclosures
      • Renewal notices
      • Billing reminders
      • Confirmations
      • Cancellation flows
      • Negative-option requirements
    • Recommend the specific copy or flow changes needed to address gaps.
  • Build market-by-market compliance knowledge

    • Independently research relevant laws and regulations in each active or planned market.
    • Document requirements, prohibitions, and legally uncertain areas so the business doesn’t repeatedly research the same questions or assume US standards apply globally.
  • Embed legal review into operations

    • Partner with Marketing, CX, and Operations so compliance is built into the process before launch.
    • Maintain compliance logs/checklists, answer operational questions quickly, and escalate material risks with sufficient clarity for leadership to make informed decisions.

Required Experience

  • US legal training and strong working knowledge of US consumer and advertising law
  • Experience with consumer protection, advertising/marketing, e-commerce, subscription, or DTC law
  • Working knowledge of FTC advertising requirements, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, ROSCA, state auto-renewal laws, and related consumer-protection requirements
  • Ability to independently research statutes, regulations, regulatory guidance, and unfamiliar jurisdictions
  • Experience translating legal requirements into concrete business recommendations
  • Strong judgment distinguishing meaningful legal exposure from theoretical risk
  • Comfort reviewing actual ads, emails, landing pages, checkout screens, and customer flows
  • Excellent written communication
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-moving environment

Experience supporting DTC/e-commerce/subscription/health/wellness/pet-health, or similarly regulated consumer products, is an advantage.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Budget: Up to $6,000 USD/month
  • Work arrangement: Remote
  • Final compensation and engagement structure will depend on experience, qualifications, and scope.
