Overview
This role is an in-house attorney position focused on managing and responding to litigation and investigative matters in a fast-moving environment. Work will span multiple areas of law, with opportunities to build internal legal processes and systems rather than managing only a routine docket of cases.
Responsibilities
- Manage litigation workstreams related to independent contractor classification, including matters involving unemployment insurance claims and disputes with users of the marketplace.
- Manage other litigation workstreams, including professional negligence and data privacy matters.
- Partner with internal and outside counsel on high-stakes litigation, including drafting responsive pleadings, briefs, and other important documents.
- Work with outside counsel to develop and participate in the company’s eDiscovery strategy, including custodial document collection, review, and production.
- Manage the third-party subpoena response strategy.
- Provide legal guidance to cross-functional teams, including product and operations.
- Support additional legal workstreams as needed.
What success looks like in the first 90 days
- Become deeply familiar with all pending litigation and investigation matters and take leadership of at least one high-stakes matter, including coordinating and communicating with outside counsel and internal stakeholders.
- Develop the ability to quickly collect and analyze complex internal data for proactive risk mitigation and for responding to litigation document requests.
- Fully own the unemployment response workstream, third-party subpoena response process, and a docket of other litigation matters (including a subset of medical malpractice matters), operating independently with minimal supervision.
- Collaborate with outside counsel on at least one eDiscovery plan that minimizes costs for custodial collection and review while meeting discovery obligations.
- Proactively and quickly provide high-quality legal guidance to other business functions, incorporating the business’s risk tolerance.
- Contribute to legal strategy decisions made by the Head of Legal.
