Product Counsel

Overview

This role involves leading the legal function for a company focused on advancing science communication through innovative technology. The Head of Legal will act as a strategic partner to leadership, product, and go-to-market teams, particularly addressing legal challenges related to AI, intellectual property, and product innovation.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a trusted advisor on legal, regulatory, and business matters, with emphasis on AI, intellectual property, and copyright issues
• Develop the organization's position on copyright and IP concerns related to AI image generation and its use in scientific publishing
• Manage all aspects of the legal function, establishing scalable processes and frameworks
• Implement an AI-forward approach to legal operations by leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and impact
• Oversee a broad range of commercial agreements, including AI SaaS contracts and other technology-related agreements

Requirements

• Law degree from an accredited law school
• Admission to practice law and in good standing in at least one jurisdiction, with the ability to practice in California or New York
• In-house experience as product counsel at a SaaS or technology company; experience with AI-driven products is highly desirable
• Strong judgment and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to cross-functional teams
• Comfortable operating as a solo legal leader in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with a builder mindset

Location

• Ability to practice law in California or New York is required, indicating a preference for candidates licensed in these jurisdictions.
