Overview

This hands-on Senior Counsel role will support AI and product initiatives as a day-to-day legal partner to Product, Engineering, Data Science, Security, and cross-functional AI stakeholders. As AI-enabled features evolve, the specific legal issues and feature work you support will shift—ranging from new automation capabilities and AI vendor relationships to product and regulatory questions.

This position is remote, with headquarters in Glendale, CA. The role reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Product, Privacy, IP & AI Governance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide practical, full product life-cycle legal counseling from ideation through launch and ongoing operations.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Data Science, Security, and Marketing on new features and AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Own day-to-day administration of the organization’s AI governance program, translating the governance framework and risk-tiered review model into scaled, repeatable processes for:
    • AI Inventory intake
    • AI Impact Assessment review
    • legal sign-off
  • Continue to mature AI Design Guidelines as the regulatory and product landscape evolves.
  • Serve as the primary legal point of contact for internal AI-related initiatives, including legal review of AI tools and use cases.
  • Conduct legal risk assessments for AI-enabled and other product capabilities, including:
    • automated decision-making
    • algorithmic scoring or prioritization
    • employee- or customer-facing automation
  • Triage broader product legal risk across areas such as telecom and call-recording laws, consumer protection, fintech, employment, and intellectual property/confidential information—exercising judgment on urgency and escalation to the right subject-matter experts (including Privacy Counsel on privacy-specific matters), business stakeholders, or outside counsel.
  • Evaluate legal and regulatory risk for AI products and tools considered for internal procurement or integration into the platform for downstream customer distribution, and define required contractual safeguards.
  • Monitor emerging AI legislation (including state automated decision-making rules, the Colorado AI Act, and similar frameworks) and translate developments into practical internal guidance.
  • Partner with Marketing and Commercial Legal to ensure AI-related product claims (e.g., “automated,” “AI-powered”) are accurate and substantiated.
  • Build and maintain playbooks, templates, and training to reduce turnaround time on routine, recurring legal questions.
  • Align AI governance priorities cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and Security to support consistent decision-making.
  • Coordinate with other Legal team members (including Privacy, Commercial, Litigation, and IP) to ensure consistent, well-managed judgment across product, AI, and adjacent legal domains.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • 8–10 years of combined law firm and in-house experience counseling technology companies on product development, data, and emerging-technology legal issues.
  • Meaningful hands-on experience advising on generative AI governance, deployment, or compliance (depth of recent, applied experience is weighed more heavily than total tenure in this niche).
  • Broader experience with automated decision-making, algorithmic systems, or data-driven products predating the generative AI wave (e.g., ad tech, biometric technology, scoring or eligibility systems, earlier-generation ML features) is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. consumer protection and communications law (TCPA), biometric privacy statutes (e.g., BIPA), and state automated decision-making/AI laws (e.g., California’s CCPA ADMT rules, the Colorado AI Act).
  • Experience building or operating an AI governance program (e.g., AI inventories, impact assessments, and cross-functional review workflows) is preferred.
  • Experience advising non-product business functions on legal and compliance considerations of adopting AI-powered tools, including vendor risk, data handling practices, and deployment safeguards.
  • Technology industry experience in a B2B SaaS company; particularly where compliance decisions affect real-world business and consumer outcomes is a plus.
  • Pragmatic, business-oriented approach to problem solving, with strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical and legal complexity into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and pivot in response to evolving organizational needs.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Flexible time off, learning and development opportunities, comprehensive onboarding, and leadership training.
  • Bonusly and peer-nominated awards.
  • Holistic health and wellness benefits, including company-paid medical, dental, and vision (100% employer-paid options and 90% coverage for dependents), FSA and HSA, 401k match, and telehealth options including memberships to One Medical.
  • Support for life events and additional benefits, including parental leave and support; up to $20k in fertility services (IUI and IVF); surrogacy and adoption reimbursement; on demand maternity support through Maven Maternity; free breast milk shipping through Maven Milk; pet insurance; legal advisory services; financial planning tools; and more.
