Remote · US Full Time
$164.7K – $266K/yr

Overview

This role involves owning the legal and regulatory thesis for regulated verticals and serving as a subject matter expert for Product, Engineering, and Product Legal when vertical regulation is the deciding factor for a launch.

Real Estate, Health and Life Sciences, and Financial Services are focus areas where compliance is not merely applied to a finished product. Responsibilities include defining, before the roadmap is set, what regulators will accept as a defensible agreement record in each market and translating those expectations into requirements product and engineering teams can build against.

This is an individual contributor role reporting to the Senior Director & Deputy General Counsel - Product Engineering, IP and Partner.

Responsibilities

  • Own the verticals thesis and requirements.
  • Define what regulatory defensibility means for the agreement record in Real Estate, Health and Life Sciences, and Financial Services, and translate that into product and engineering requirements at the design and roadmap stage (not just launch review), including:
    • Electronic signature validity
    • Record keeping and retention
    • In-product disclosures
    • Integrity and provenance of the record itself
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Product Legal and own the vertical regulatory depth they rely on.
  • Build reusable positions, an answer library, and interpretation guidance for recurring questions, including:
    • 21 CFR Part 11
    • HIPAA
    • GLBA
    • SEC and FINRA recordkeeping
    • PCI DSS
    • NACHA
  • Partner directly on launches where vertical regulation drives the outcome.
  • Keep the team current as regulatory regimes evolve.
  • Maintain alignment between commitments and product capability by assessing whether compliance commitments are deliverable in the product as built.
  • Define compensating controls where commitments cannot be delivered as stated.
  • Maintain an inventory of commitments measured against actual capability.
  • Partner with commercial legal, privacy, and AI governance on commitments raised in customer deals.
  • Run a light intake process so routine compliance questions route appropriately rather than accumulating in a single queue.

Requirements

  • Law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice and in good standing in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • 8+ years of law firm and/or in-house experience.
  • Experience advising product and engineering teams directly in a regulated technology environment.
  • Experience translating regulatory requirements into product and engineering requirements that shipped.
  • Experience in at least one regulated vertical: health and life sciences, financial services, or payments.
  • Experience serving as an internal expert other lawyers rely on.
  • Experience advising on or approving customer-facing compliance representations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with electronic signature and transaction law, such as ESIGN, UETA, or eIDAS.
  • Experience with one or more of 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, GLBA, SEC or FINRA recordkeeping, PCI DSS, or NACHA standards.
  • Experience with AI or AI governance.
  • Experience building a knowledge base or answer library used by other lawyers.
  • Experience solving hard problems with a close-knit team.
