Senior Legal Counsel - Subscriptions

Overview

This role involves serving as the dedicated legal expert for a subscription offering within a remote-first technology organization focused on online privacy. The position supports compliance across multiple global jurisdictions and enables the business to expand subscription services internationally. The legal counsel will collaborate closely with product, engineering, marketing, and finance teams to integrate legal considerations into daily operations and strategic projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the legal framework for subscription services, tracking evolving requirements across jurisdictions.
• Review and advise on in-product notices, terms of service, and marketing materials related to the subscription offering.
• Analyze legal requirements for online payments, free trials, promotions, and multi-jurisdictional auto-renewal notices.
• Own all subscription-related legal matters end-to-end, from early ideation through launch.
• Act as a proactive partner to the business, providing clear, actionable legal guidance.

Requirements

• Minimum of 7 years of legal experience, with preference for in-house experience.
• Experience advising on subscription services, consumer-facing software products, or e-commerce.
• Proven ability to autonomously track and implement evolving legal requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
• Skilled at translating complex legal advice into clear guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
• Strong time management and prioritization skills in a fast-paced, remote-first environment.
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Membership in good standing with one U.S. state bar.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience drafting terms of service and handling legal matters related to subscription or consumer software products.

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual salary of $178,500 USD plus stock options.
• Compensation is consistent across professional levels regardless of geographic location.

Location & Work Arrangement

• Remote-first position with an average full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.
• Flexible work arrangement with no core hours.

• Expected travel twice yearly for company all-hands and team retreats (approximately 4-5 days each).
