Overview

A leading organization in the Pharmaceuticals & Biotech sector is seeking a Senior Director - Patent Counsel specializing in Genetic Medicines. This role supports high-impact initiatives that directly influence business performance and team success. The position involves cross-functional collaboration to advance priorities, solve complex challenges, and deliver measurable results. It offers the opportunity to shape both strategic direction and daily operations in a dynamic environment.

Location: Remote (U.S. based candidates only; no visa sponsorship available)

Compensation: $214,500 – $314,600 annually

Responsibilities

  • Draft and prosecute global patent applications related to genetic medicines and therapies
  • Participate in departmental mentorship forums to contribute to patent portfolio strategy
  • Analyze risks and develop strategies aligned with business objectives
  • Advise teams on exclusivity, freedom to operate, and litigation risks using clear and accessible language
  • Stay informed on global patent laws and apply insights to responsibilities and team opportunities
  • Manage multiple projects, implement new policies, and utilize AI tools to enhance efficiency
  • Promote efficiency and collaboration within the legal team

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field relevant to genetic medicine
  • Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree
  • Minimum of four years post-J.D. patent attorney experience in a law firm or industry setting
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state and authorized to represent clients before the USPTO
  • Strong communication skills for effective interaction with scientists and management
  • Authorized to work full-time in the U.S. without visa sponsorship

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in patent prosecution related to gene therapy
  • Expertise in drafting patent applications for genetic medicines
  • Knowledge of patent laws and regulations
  • Familiarity with collaborative legal tools and legal research databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis)
  • Experience leveraging AI technologies for legal document review
  • Scientific knowledge in genetic medicine, including molecular biology and biochemistry
  • Proficiency with project management software (e.g., Trello, Asana) for handling multiple projects
  • Experience with intellectual property management systems (e.g., Anaqua, CPA Global)
  • Commitment to continuing legal education to stay current on global patent laws and precedents
