A renewable energy asset management and software company supporting solar, wind, and battery storage assets across North America is seeking an Assistant General Counsel (AGC) to serve as the first senior in-house lawyer. This role focuses on establishing a scalable legal foundation centered on commercial contracting and risk management.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the AGC will be the primary internal legal partner for commercial contracting and sales enablement. Responsibilities include ownership of customer agreements, contract standards, and legal processes that support revenue growth. The position requires close collaboration with Sales, Operations, Product, and Compliance teams to enable efficient deal execution while maintaining disciplined risk management.

This is a hands-on, execution-oriented role involving the design and implementation of core legal infrastructure, selective management of outside counsel, and bringing structure, consistency, and speed to the contracting environment as the business scales.

Responsibilities

Commercial Contracting & Sales Enablement

  • Provide timely, practical legal guidance to support business progress while protecting company interests.

Legal Function Build-Out & Outside Counsel Management

  • Establish the foundation of the in-house legal function, including contracting workflows, playbooks, clause libraries, and negotiation guidelines.
  • Manage outside counsel to ensure high-quality work, cost discipline, and alignment with business priorities.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to reduce friction in contracting and shorten deal cycles.
  • Develop legal practices and tools that scale with the business without slowing execution.

Corporate & General Legal Support

  • Support day-to-day legal needs including corporate governance, employment-related issues, intellectual property, and general risk management.
  • Assist with internal policies, legal guidance, and documentation related to regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Provide contract interpretation, issue resolution, and ongoing risk management support to internal teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with the CEO and functional leaders to align legal support with commercial and operational priorities.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Compliance, and Operations teams on customer diligence requests and contractual obligations.
  • Anticipate legal needs as offerings and customer base expand.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school and active bar membership in good standing.
  • Approximately 4–8 years of legal experience, including law firm and/or in-house experience.
  • Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, including services and technology/SaaS agreements.
  • Comfort leveraging AI tools to augment legal functions; experience using AI to improve contracting efficiency or legal operations is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in energy, infrastructure, or renewable energy sectors is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and balance legal risk with business objectives.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
