Overview

The organization is building a new healthcare clearinghouse. This role will help navigate the legal and regulatory questions that arise in the healthcare clearinghouse and EDI/X12 HIPAA transaction environment, where precedent can be limited and approaches may not be standardized.

The General Counsel will lead both defensive and offensive legal strategy—actively guiding the organization as it defends its interests and advances its positions. The role also owns the broader legal function in close partnership with the Head of Legal.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute regulatory and legal strategy to deepen relationships with payers, including navigating enforcement, compliance requirements, and relationship dynamics with organizations that control market access.
  • Lead competitive and enforcement matters, defending and advancing the organization’s interests when legal strategy directly impacts market outcomes.
  • Build the legal framework for novel data products operating in complex regulatory areas, translating uncertainty into defensible product strategy.
  • Use legal and regulatory expertise to identify growth opportunities, accelerate deals, and remove blockers.
  • Own the full scope of legal for a fast-growing company alongside the Head of Legal, including:
    • Contracts
    • Disputes
    • Compliance
    • Intellectual property (IP)
    • Employment
    • Corporate governance
    • Fundraising
  • Partner directly with the CEO and board on strategic decisions where legal and regulatory considerations shape business direction.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant experience between law firms and fast-paced in-house roles.
  • Significant in-house experience, including managing litigation and other disputes, ideally while serving in a senior legal role at a high-growth company.
  • Deep healthcare experience strongly preferred. Lived experience in the regulatory and commercial complexity of healthcare infrastructure, payers, providers, or health tech is ideal. Experience in another heavily regulated, high-complexity industry (e.g., financial services, payments, insurance) will also be considered.
  • Generalist mindset with the ability to solve problems across domains rather than only within a specialty; when confronted with unfamiliar topics, you figure them out instead of escalating by default.
  • Ability to operate quickly and keep legal work aligned with fast execution.
  • Commercial and business-oriented approach—think like a business leader who uses legal expertise to support company strategy.
  • JD and membership in at least one U.S. state bar.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong alignment with the organization’s operating principles and standards.
