Legal Translator and Editor

Overview

A woman-owned small business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan area is seeking professional freelance translators, editors, and transcribers to work remotely on legal documents and audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter. The work involves translating, editing, and/or transcribing between English and Bengali.

Responsibilities

• Translate and/or edit legal documents such as affidavits and depositions between English and Bengali.
• Transcribe and edit audio files, including those containing slang and idioms.
• Demonstrate strong command of legal terminology in both English and Bengali.
• Follow government client style guides and quality standards.
• Use domain-specific terminology accurately.
• Review and certify the quality of other translators’ work as needed.
• Maintain formatting consistent with source documents using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Utilize CAT tools such as Trados Studio.
• Adhere to a professional code of ethics in transcription and translation work.

Requirements

• Active U.S. Public Trust or higher security clearance, or willingness to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience translating and/or editing between English and Bengali.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience performing audio transcription, with ability to use software and equipment to enhance transcription quality.
• Familiarity with legal terminology in both English and Bengali.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Proficient use of CAT tools such as SDL Trados.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual with a law degree, paralegal certificate, or documented legal translation or transcription experience.
• Experience editing audio transcription documents.
• Active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
• Professional certification such as ATA or NAJIT.
