Overview
The organization is seeking a Managing Chief Counsel to serve as the principal legal advisor and strategic partner to Core Ventures and to provide healthcare regulatory support for the US Oncology Network (Network). This is a broad generalist role spanning transactions, operations, data governance, and healthcare regulation across one of the largest community oncology platforms in the United States.
Responsibilities
Core Ventures
- Provide legal oversight of the Core Ventures operating model, including management services agreements, intercompany arrangements, and amendments.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Core Ventures executive leadership by preparing and presenting executive and board-level materials supporting major initiatives and significant obligations.
- Support practice integration and post-close structuring, including asset transfers, physician alignment, and ownership frameworks.
- Lead negotiation and execution of complex commercial agreements, including vendor and supplier contracts, strategic partnerships and affiliations, and data services, pharmacy, and technology arrangements.
- Design and implement contracting governance frameworks covering intake, review, approval, and execution.
Network Regulatory and Compliance Partnership
- Advise on healthcare regulatory frameworks, including anti-kickback, fraud and abuse laws, CMS requirements, and state regulations affecting community oncology practices.
- Partner with business unit and enterprise compliance teams to advance compliance programs and initiatives.
- Advise on regulatory questions arising from patient communications and care model programs, including social determinants of health initiatives under the Enhancing Oncology Model.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and develop attorneys and legal specialists supporting Core Ventures; allocate work so matters are handled at the right level.
- Drive continuous improvement in intake, triage, and workflow so legal support scales with Core Ventures growth.
Legal Operations and Transformative Thinking
- Partner cross-functionally with privacy, compliance, security, finance, procurement, IT, and operations to support timely, informed decision-making and streamlined execution.
- Lead continuous improvement across legal operations by using AI-enabled and other technology-enabled tools, intake and triage contracting models, standardized templates and playbooks, and workflow redesign—so legal support scales without a proportional increase in headcount.
What Success Looks Like
- Matters advance efficiently and consistently, with sound judgment and a digital-first, continuous-improvement mindset; novel, high-risk, or precedent-setting issues are surfaced proactively to the Managing Principal Counsel and Assistant General Counsel.
- Business partners experience Legal as customer-first and outcomes-oriented: guidance is practical, risk is clearly framed, and collaboration reduces friction.
- Regulatory and compliance risk is identified early and managed to resolution; contracting processes, templates, playbooks, and workflows are modernized and scaled, with measurable improvement in cycle time, quality, consistency, and stakeholder experience.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school; typically 12 or more years of relevant legal experience.
- Active membership in good standing of at least one state bar.
- Substantial healthcare regulatory experience, including fraud and abuse laws, Stark, Anti-Kickback, HIPAA, and state corporate practice of medicine and licensure frameworks.
- Experience leading or developing a legal team, including attorneys and legal support professionals.
- Demonstrated experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial and healthcare services agreements.
- Mature professional judgment to navigate legal and business considerations, assess risk, exercise discretion, and escalate thoughtfully.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain risk and recommended paths forward in clear, business-focused terms to executives and clinicians.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting physician practices, management services organizations, or other regulated healthcare services businesses.
- Experience advising on value-based care and CMS innovation models, including the Enhancing Oncology Model or similar programs.
- Demonstrated ability to lead or contribute to process improvement initiatives such as playbooks, templates, workflow redesign, contract lifecycle management, or other legal technology solutions.
- Prior in-house experience in a large, matrixed organization.
