Overview
This role focuses on defining and owning the standards that turn AI- and engineering-generated documents into professional, usable outputs.
You will translate expert judgment about document quality into canonical standards, measurable specifications, and test fixtures—then work with teams to audit outputs, improve quality, and resolve disputes.
Responsibilities
- Define “good” by writing canonical standards for:
- Typography, hierarchy, whitespace
- Tables, lists, headings
- Citations, pagination
- Headers and footers, exhibits, and numbering
- Build a document taxonomy and formatting grammar for each document family, including:
- Legal briefs, contracts, client memos, research reports, and others
- Decide where conventions share a base and where they diverge
- Audit AI output by reviewing several hundred generated documents and:
- Building a failure taxonomy
- Classifying every formatting defect by type, severity, and root cause
- Reporting patterns
- Create gold-standard, human-crafted reference documents for each document type and version them as test fixtures for AI and engineering teams
- Turn judgment into explicit, testable specifications, including (examples):
- Heading 2 behavior
- Rules for what tables may never do
- No orphaned headings
- Page-break behavior
- Numbering linked to styles rather than typed by hand
- Preference for real document structure (styles, numbering, sections) over manual visual formatting
- Create a Document Quality Score covering:
- Structural integrity, visual hierarchy, consistency
- Readability, template compliance, editability
- Work with engineering to make it measurable and automatable where possible, and calibrate it against human expert judgment
- Act as standards owner by:
- Adjudicating disputes
- Reviewing new templates
- Representing document quality in product and model-evaluation decisions
Requirements
- Deep expertise in professional document production (e.g., legal document production, publishing, technical or editorial design, knowledge management, or a similar field), with a track record of setting standards rather than just following them
- Expert command of Word-style structure, including:
- Style-linked numbering, multilevel lists
- Sections, headers and footers
- Tables of contents and authorities
- Cross-references and tracked changes
- Ability to explain why a document is broken even when it looks right
- Strong typographic and information-design judgment, including the ability to explain why something is wrong—not just that it is
- Sound judgment across professional domains, including familiarity with legal and financial document conventions
- Experience in a large law firm, legal operations, or legal technology
- Experience with document automation, template systems, or design systems
- Familiarity with programmatic document generation (OOXML, PDF) and enough technical fluency to review output at the file level
- Prior work evaluating or improving AI-generated content
Compensation & Benefits
- U.S. National Base Pay Range: $95,300 - $158,800. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates.
- Eligible for an annual incentive bonus
- Country-specific benefits
- Working flexible hours (flexing times when you work during the day)
- Wellbeing initiatives, shared parental leave, study assistance, and sabbaticals
Location
The role includes a U.S. National Base Pay Range and may apply geographic differentials depending on location.
