Overview
This role focuses on defining and owning a Document Quality System that enables AI and engineering teams to produce professional, usable documents. You will translate expert judgment about document quality into clear, buildable standards—including reference documents, rules, and measurable specifications that can be tested.
Responsibilities
- Define “good” by writing canonical standards for:
- typography, hierarchy, whitespace
- tables, lists, headings
- citations, pagination
- headers and footers, exhibits
- numbering
- Build a document taxonomy and define a distinct formatting grammar for each document family (e.g., legal briefs, contracts, client memos, research reports, and others), including decisions on where families share a base vs. diverge.
- Audit AI output by:
- reviewing several hundred generated documents
- building a failure taxonomy
- classifying every formatting defect by type, severity, and root cause
- reporting patterns
- Create gold-standard documents by producing human-crafted reference documents for each document type and versioning them as test fixtures for AI and engineering teams.
- Turn judgment into rules by writing explicit, testable specifications, such as:
- Heading 2 behavior
- table constraints (including what tables may never do)
- preventing orphaned headings
- page-break behavior
- numbering that stays linked to styles rather than being typed by hand
- prioritizing real document structure (styles, numbering, sections) over manual visual formatting
- Create the quality score by developing a Document Quality Score covering:
- structural integrity
- visual hierarchy
- consistency
- readability
- template compliance
- editability
- working with engineering to make it measurable and automatable where possible, and calibrating it against human expert judgment
- Be the standards owner by adjudicating disputes, reviewing new templates, and representing document quality in product and model-evaluation decisions.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in professional document production (such as legal document production, publishing, technical or editorial design, knowledge management, or a similar field), with a track record of setting standards rather than only following them.
- Expert command of Word-style structure, including:
- style-linked numbering
- multilevel lists
- sections
- headers and footers
- tables of contents and authorities
- cross-references
- tracked changes
- ability to explain why a document is broken even if it looks right
- Strong typographic and information-design judgment, including the ability to explain why something is wrong—not just that it is.
- Sound judgment across professional domains, including familiarity with legal and financial document conventions.
- Experience in a large law firm, legal operations, or legal technology.
- Experience with document automation, template systems, or design systems.
- Familiarity with programmatic document generation (OOXML, PDF) and sufficient technical fluency to review output at the file level.
- Prior work evaluating or improving AI-generated content.
