Overview

This is a senior, largely independent product counsel role focused on privacy and children’s privacy compliance across the full product lifecycle. You will serve as the primary legal partner to Product, Engineering, Trust & Safety, Design, and Marketing, owning the privacy program day-to-day and advising on privacy, consumer protection, IP, emerging AI regulation, and other legal issues that arise as the organization ships new hardware features, games, and subscription content.

Responsibilities

Privacy & Child Safety Program Ownership

  • Own the privacy program end-to-end, including:
    • COPPA compliance
    • Data mapping for camera- and AI-driven product functionality
    • Vendor data processing agreements
    • Consent and disclosure flows for a product used heavily by children
  • Draft, review, and maintain the privacy policy, terms of service, and parental consent flows, including planning for new markets and aligning with international children’s/data protection frameworks (e.g., GDPR and other regional children’s privacy requirements).
  • Advise Product, Engineering, Trust & Safety, and Design on privacy-by-design principles and age-appropriate product experiences from ideation through launch.
  • Monitor the evolving regulatory landscape for children’s privacy and online safety (including COPPA, state age-appropriate design laws, GDPR-K, and similar frameworks) and translate changes into actionable product guidance.
  • Serve as the point of contact for privacy incidents, regulatory inquiries, and data subject/parental requests; escalate appropriately to the General Counsel and outside counsel.
  • Act as the escalation point for Legal Operations and Commercial Counsel on privacy or COPPA questions that arise in vendor, commercial, or operational contexts.

Product Counseling Across the Lifecycle

  • Embed with Product, Engineering, Trust & Safety, Design, and Marketing to review new features, hardware capabilities, and AI/motion-detection functionality for legal risk from concept through launch.
  • Advise on consumer protection issues relevant to subscription and in-product offerings, including disclosures, auto-renewal compliance, and promotions or sweepstakes tied to product launches or marketing campaigns.
  • Review product user experiences, in-app disclosures, and marketing/advertising materials to mitigate legal risk while supporting team goals.
  • Provide practical guidance on emerging AI regulation as it applies to computer vision and motion-detection technology, including responsible AI development and deployment considerations.
  • Flag physical product safety and liability considerations that arise from hardware feature design (e.g., camera/sensor placement, physical play mechanics, choking/impact hazards for young users) to the General Counsel and outside counsel during feature review.
  • Support IP strategy for product innovation, including facilitating invention harvesting and partnering on patent-strategy conversations with Engineering.
  • Advise on trademark use in-product in partnership with Legal Operations on portfolio docketing.

Building the Function

  • Create playbooks, guides, and internal training to enable Product, Engineering, and Marketing to self-serve on lower-risk questions while escalating the right issues early.
  • Design a scalable legal review process for product launches that keeps pace with release cadence without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Partner with Legal Operations on intake triage and template design for product-related legal requests.
  • Coordinate with Commercial Counsel to keep licensing/partnership agreements aligned with product privacy and IP commitments.
  • Manage outside counsel on specialized privacy, AI regulatory, product-safety, or IP matters as needed; Legal Operations administers the underlying vendor relationship and spend.
  • Help define the future shape and growth of the product legal function as the organization scales.

Requirements

  • J.D. and active bar membership in good standing (California or another U.S. state, as applicable).
  • 4–7+ years of relevant legal experience combining law firm and in-house product counseling at a technology or consumer products company.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with children’s privacy compliance, including COPPA and age-appropriate design frameworks (e.g., GDPR-K or similar).
  • Experience advising product, engineering, and design teams throughout the full product development lifecycle.
  • Working knowledge of consumer protection law as applied to subscriptions, promotions, and marketing claims.
  • Comfort advising on emerging AI/computer vision regulatory questions even without a technical background, with genuine interest in the underlying technology.
  • Builder mindset: ability to create playbooks, review processes, and governance frameworks from scratch.
  • Excellent judgment translating complex legal and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal audiences under real deadlines.
  • Strong cross-functional relationship-building skills and a collaborative, low-ego approach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Privacy certification (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, or similar) or willingness to obtain one.
  • Experience in consumer hardware, consumer electronics, gaming, or toy/kids’ products.
  • Experience supporting sweepstakes, contests, or promotions tied to consumer products or subscriptions.
  • Exposure to patent or trademark strategy in a product/engineering context.
  • Experience advising on international product launches and multi-jurisdictional compliance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary: USD 180,000– USD 220,000
  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Flexible working hours and vacation policy.
  • Opportunity for hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies in the evolving gaming field.
