Senior Counsel

Overview

This role supports the organization’s product, privacy, and regulatory work. The position advises product, engineering, and marketing teams as they launch new products, untangles complex global regulatory requirements that apply to the organization’s business, and helps protect free expression and the open web.

The organization is hiring at either the Counsel or Senior Counsel level. Title, compensation, and the scope of independent ownership over the matters described below will reflect the experience and qualifications brought to the role.

Responsibilities

• Advise product, engineering, and trust & safety teams on implementation of regulations and industry standards, with a focus on content safety, consumer protection, intellectual property, privacy, and data security.
• Provide product counseling across web hosting, site creation, content publication, ecommerce, social media, and related areas, using a business-forward approach.
• Provide subject matter expertise on data protection and privacy laws (including GDPR and CCPA), advise on consent frameworks for digital marketing and advertising, and build scalable processes for documenting compliance.
• Track and prepare for upcoming regulations; participate in industry groups globally and represent the organization before regulators while advocating for organizational interests with government agencies and officials.
• Partner with trust & safety teams to develop and oversee policies that promote freedom of expression and user safety while complying with applicable laws.
• Design processes and workflows that enable the legal team to scale compliance as regulatory and privacy requirements increase.

Requirements

• JD from a US accredited law school with 5+ years of relevant experience (or an exception EU-based attorney)
• Familiarity with industries, concepts, and business models relevant to open source, user-generated content, web hosting, social media, ecommerce, and digital advertising, including the product, privacy, and regulatory requirements that apply to them
• Humble, collaborative teammate who can also function independently and work in an asynchronous environment; willingness and ability to stretch into new areas such as litigation or IP if needed
• Ability to operate in “grey areas” and provide clear recommendations even with imperfect information

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with laws like DSA, the UK and Australian Online Safety Acts, EU AI Act, and worldwide age-assurance laws

Compensation & Benefits

• Prioritizing candidates who reside in the United States or Europe.
• Salary range: $180,000 - $300,000 USD.
  • Salary ranges are global, regardless of location, and pay is made in local currency.
• Pay reflects the potential contribution and impact; it may, in some cases, go beyond the range stated.
• Fully remote role with an open vacation policy.
