Sr. Counsel, Core Product

Overview

An organization is seeking an experienced, self-motivated, and creative lawyer to join a small, agile legal team supporting a growing business. The primary focus of this role is to provide legal support to core product and engineering teams, acting as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to senior business and legal leadership. The role involves driving strategy on cutting-edge legal issues related to generative AI, privacy, intellectual property, and safety.

This position requires embracing AI as a core part of the work process, using AI tools to enhance efficiency, accelerate problem-solving, and increase impact.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with strategy, engineering, product management, communications, and legal teams to identify and manage legal risks throughout all stages of product development.
• Embed with product teams to provide pragmatic and strategic legal advice as product areas evolve.
• Advise on emerging legal issues related to generative AI, content acquisition, IP/copyright, open source, and privacy.
• Develop and implement practical measures to mitigate risk, improve speed and efficiency, and support long-term organizational goals.
• Create scalable legal processes, automation, and AI-enabled solutions to enhance efficiency, reduce cycle times, and deliver consistent, high-quality guidance to product and engineering teams.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree with 8+ years of relevant legal experience in demanding and innovative environments.
• At least 2 years of in-house legal experience at a technology company preferred.
• Experience counseling on artificial intelligence, intellectual property/copyright, safety, and privacy issues.
• Exceptional judgment, integrity, and excellent communication skills.
• Process-driven and results-oriented with the ability to identify, prioritize, and resolve issues independently and quickly.
• Strategic thinker with a proven track record of delivering creative and pragmatic solutions to novel legal challenges.
• Strong project management skills, capable of building sustainable programs and processes for scale and driving cross-functional initiatives to completion.
• An AI-forward mindset with experience using AI tools to accelerate analysis, simplify complex problems, and support fast-moving product development.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary range: $158,765 to $326,870 USD annually.
• Position is eligible for equity.
• Final salary is based on factors including location, travel, relevant prior experience, and specific skills.

Location & Work Model

• This role is US-based only.
• The position is remote with an expectation of in-person collaboration 1-2 times per quarter.
• Relocation assistance is not provided.
