Overview
A full-service litigation and business law firm with multiple U.S. locations is seeking a Conflicts Counsel. This role may be performed remotely or from any firm location.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Conflicts, Client Engagement, and Risk Management teams to identify and resolve conflicts of interest related to new and existing business intake, lateral clearances, outside counsel guidelines (OCGs), requests for proposals (RFPs), and other conflicts-related matters.
- Direct and conduct conflicts department processes including review, identification, and resolution of conflicts of interest.
- Draft conflicts waivers and review lateral candidate conflicts.
- Provide recommendations on ethical wall implementation and conflicts-related language for engagement letters.
- Communicate clearly and timely with partners, staff, and leadership regarding conflicts requests and complex issues.
- Maintain thorough and accurate records of conflicts resolutions.
- Identify, resolve, and document erroneous, outdated, or incomplete conflicts information to maintain data integrity.
- Maintain working knowledge of technologies supporting conflicts operations, including Intapp Open and Intapp Terms.
- Serve as a resource for conflicts analysts on conflict identification and resolution.
- Discuss conflict issues with attorneys, analysts, business intake, support staff, and leadership while maintaining objectivity and professional independence.
- Review conflicts requests and provide concise evaluations and resolution steps.
- Draft and review waiver and engagement letter language to ensure proper conflicts coverage and execution.
- Make requests and recommendations regarding ethical walls.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of legal ethics, case law, and professional responsibility rules related to conflicts.
- Review client outside counsel guidelines and engagement agreements for policy deviations and coordinate with billing and partners to address them.
- Assist with new hire candidate clearance, including conflicts analysis, drafting engagement agreements and waivers, and training new lateral partners.
- Assist Client Development team and partners with RFPs and similar business opportunities.
- Prepare and deliver training on conflicts, ethics, and professional responsibility to conflicts team and firm personnel.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree and active U.S. law license in the candidate's jurisdiction of residence.
- Minimum of three years of direct, full-time conflicts experience at a large law firm.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience with online reference materials and Boolean searching techniques preferred.
- Strong preference for experience with Intapp Open and Intapp Terms.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve conflicts of interest issues.
- Strong written communication skills, capable of summarizing complex conflicts issues clearly and concisely.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities and conflicts requests effectively.
- Ability and availability to travel occasionally to other firm locations.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is commensurate with skill, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. Expected salary ranges by location are:
- California: $131,000 - $268,000
- Colorado: $121,000 - $215,000
- Illinois: $119,000 - $230,000
- Maryland: $127,000 - $193,000
- Massachusetts: $131,000 - $251,000
- Minnesota: $131,000 - $217,000
- Jersey City, NJ: $143,000 - $258,000
- New York: $122,000 - $264,000
- Vermont: $130,000 - $249,000
- Washington: $127,000 - $242,000
- Washington, D.C.: $169,000 - $249,000
These salaries do not include discretionary bonuses, which are non-guaranteed and based on individual and firm performance.
