Overview
A full-service litigation and business law firm with multiple U.S. locations is seeking a Conflicts Counsel to join their Conflicts Department. This role involves collaborating with colleagues in Conflicts, Client Engagement, and Risk Management to identify and resolve conflicts of interest related to new and existing business intake, lateral clearances, outside counsel guidelines, requests for proposals, and other conflicts-related matters. The position may be filled remotely or at any firm location.
Responsibilities
- Maintain thorough knowledge of technologies supporting Conflicts operations, including Intapp Open and Intapp Terms.
- Serve as a resource for conflicts analysts on identifying and resolving conflicts of interest.
- Communicate with attorneys, analysts, business intake, support staff, and leadership to identify and resolve potential conflicts while maintaining objectivity and professional independence.
- Review conflicts requests, provide concise evaluations of potential issues, communicate and execute resolution steps, and document outcomes.
- Draft and review language in waiver and engagement letters to address conflicts issues and ensure proper execution.
- Review existing client conflict waivers for applicability to new conflicts.
- Make requests and recommendations regarding ethical wall implementation.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of legal ethics, case law, professional responsibility rules related to conflicts, and firm policies.
- Review client outside counsel guidelines and engagement agreements to identify deviations from firm policies and work with billing and relationship partners to address them.
- Assist with review and clearance of new hire candidates, including conflicts analysis, drafting engagement agreements and waivers, communicating status, and training new lateral partner hires.
- Assist in maintaining and documenting client agreements within conflicts software and databases.
- Support Client Development team and partners in reviewing and responding to Requests for Proposals and similar business opportunities.
- Prepare and deliver training for Conflicts team, attorneys, and staff on conflicts, ethics, and professional responsibility topics.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree and active U.S. law license in the candidate's jurisdiction of residence.
- Minimum of three years of direct, full-time conflicts experience at a large law firm.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience with online reference materials and Boolean searching techniques preferred.
- Strong preference for experience with Intapp Open and Intapp Terms.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve conflicts of interest issues effectively.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities, emails, and conflicts requests.
- Excellent writing skills with the ability to clearly and concisely communicate complex conflicts issues.
- Ability and availability to travel occasionally to other firm locations as needed.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is commensurate with skill, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. Expected salary ranges by location are:
- California: $131,000 - $268,000
- Colorado: $121,000 - $215,000
- Illinois: $119,000 - $230,000
- Maryland: $127,000 - $193,000
- Massachusetts: $131,000 - $251,000
- Minnesota: $131,000 - $217,000
- Jersey City, NJ: $143,000 - $258,000
- New York: $122,000 - $264,000
- Vermont: $130,000 - $249,000
- Washington: $127,000 - $242,000
- Washington, D.C.: $169,000 - $249,000
These salaries do not include discretionary bonuses, which are non-guaranteed and dependent on individual and firm performance.

Location
