Overview
The Counselor to the Chief Circuit Judge serves as a trusted advisor and aide, providing comprehensive legal and administrative support to the Chief Circuit Judge’s key responsibilities. This includes support relating to:
- Membership on the Judicial Conference of the United States (JCUS) and its Executive Committee
- Service as the presiding judge of the Tenth Circuit’s Judicial Council
- Leadership as the administrative leader of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals
The Counselor may work closely with the Office of the Circuit Executive on special projects that advance the work of the Chief Circuit Judge in these roles. The position requires an organized, proactive approach and the ability to handle complex and confidential matters.
Responsibilities
- Understand, interpret, and brief on complex and confidential information.
- Communicate on high-level topics with government officials within and outside of the Tenth Circuit, including in Washington D.C., on behalf of the Chief Judge.
- Independently manage assignments.
- Work closely with the Chief Judge while also interacting with other judicial officers, court unit executives, and national staff of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (AO) to support the execution of administrative duties.
- Provide legal and administrative support connected to the Chief Circuit Judge’s JCUS, Judicial Council, and administrative leadership roles.
- Collaborate with the Office of the Circuit Executive on special projects advancing the Chief Circuit Judge’s work.
Requirements
- Ability to work with complex and confidential information, including understanding, interpreting, and briefing.
- Strong communication skills for high-level discussions with government officials within and outside the Tenth Circuit, including in Washington D.C.
- Organizational skills and initiative to independently manage assignments.
Location
Washington D.C. (as part of communications with government officials, including travel as needed).
