Overview
This role serves as Product Counsel, embedded with Product, Engineering, and Design to help scope, design, and deliver customer-focused products from early stages through launch. The work spans regulated health and consumer-facing experiences, including product disclosures, privacy and data use, and AI-enabled features.
Responsibilities
- Embed with Product, Engineering, and Design from early scoping through launch across new features, platform integrations, and partner-facing surfaces
- Advise on the product’s regulatory architecture, including ICHRA and IRS substantiation rules, ERISA, ACA, and related producer licensing and TPA obligations within regulated subsidiaries
- Partner with the Compliance team on product-facing regulatory review while owning pre-launch design and disclosure judgment
- Review in-product disclosures, onboarding and enrollment flows, and product marketing
- Draft and review customer-facing legal surfaces, including terms of service, user agreements, consents and authorizations, notices, and disclosures
- Counsel on privacy, data use, and AI-powered features, including building and maintaining the review process
- Identify protectable intellectual property assets and work with IP counsel to protect them
- Build legal systems that scale (e.g., launch checklists, playbooks, self-serve guidance, and training) so teams can move quickly without requiring a lawyer for every decision
- Help set the standard for how product legal work is delivered as the function grows
- Collaborate with commercial counsel when product decisions create downstream contractual commitments to carriers, partners, or customers
- During the first six months: embed with Product and Engineering (joined at design rather than launch review), help establish written standards for product-facing regulatory reviews used by both teams, and build playbooks focused on novel issues
Requirements
- JD from an accredited law school
- 9+ years of legal practice, including meaningful in-house time supporting Product and Engineering teams
- Experience advising on regulated consumer products where compliance obligations are designed into the product rather than added through documentation
- Knowledge of health insurance, employee benefits, financial services, or a comparably regulated environment (experience in some areas is acceptable)
- Ability to review product specifications, data flows, or design files and identify legal issues without being walked through them
- Comfort making and documenting risk decisions when regulatory answers are unsettled, with a clear sense of which risks are worth slowing a launch for
- Track record of building legal processes, frameworks, and operations in startup or high-growth environments
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach with cross-functional teams, especially engineers and PMs
- Ability and willingness to lead even without direct people-management responsibility
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in health benefits, payroll, and tax reporting
- Depth in either IP or data protection laws
- Experience with AI governance in a consumer-facing product
- A demonstrated approach to using new technologies (including AI tooling) in day-to-day work
- Strong business acumen with the ability to balance legal risk against commercial objectives
