Overview
A global intellectual property law firm is seeking a Conflicts Manager or Managing Conflicts Counsel (if licensed attorney) to join their fast-paced Risk Management Department. This remote-first role is part of a team that primarily works from home, with a current focus on candidates located in Minnesota, Texas, Georgia, and Illinois.
Responsibilities
- Manage all conflicts searching, identification, and resolution of potential ethical, business, and subject matter conflicts related to new business and lateral intake.
- Ensure the integrity of the firm’s conflicts data.
- Carry out managerial responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, training, monitoring, planning, assigning, and directing work of conflicts staff.
- Appraise performance, handle personnel-related issues, address complaints, and resolve problems.
- Serve as a role model and mentor, providing superior service to attorneys, management, and employees.
- Coach team members to meet business goals and support their development through training and performance evaluations.
- Involve team members in collaborative decision-making as applicable.
- Develop, recommend, and implement new business and lateral intake and conflicts checking processes, procedures, systems, and application updates/modifications.
- Work with firm management including General Counsel and the Intake Committee to standardize, implement, and enforce policies and practices.
- Analyze and resolve complex conflict issues regarding new business and lateral onboarding.
- Manage ongoing maintenance of conflicts data, monitor conflicts forums and annotations, and ensure receipt of client waivers and other required conflict information.
- Prepare for, host, and document Intake Committee conference calls; provide information and assistance to committee members and General Counsel.
- Provide orientation and training for new attorneys and professional staff on conflicts and lateral hire procedures.
- Document procedures in written and online manuals.
Requirements
- For Conflicts Manager: Bachelor’s degree required.
- For Managing Conflicts Counsel: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active licensure in good standing in the practicing state.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in conflicts or new business intake within a law firm, with expertise in identifying, analyzing, and resolving conflicts of interest including ethical, subject matter, and business conflicts.
- At least 5 years of supervisory or management experience in conflicts or new business intake.
- Working knowledge of automated conflicts databases (e.g., InTapp).
- Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and training attorneys and professional staff.
- Excellent investigative, analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Ability to work independently, identify issues, recommend and implement solutions.
- Ability to oversee team members in various positions and geographic locations.
- Strong leadership skills including critical thinking, risk-taking, and creativity.
- Managerial skills to communicate effectively, provide instruction, determine priorities, and coordinate team activities.
- Ability to delegate and manage resources effectively.
- Highly effective communication skills for conducting meetings and corresponding with firm leadership on complex issues.
- Adaptability to changing responsibilities and circumstances.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary range: $134,000 - $200,000 per year, based on education, experience, skills, and qualifications.
