Overview

A global intellectual property law firm is seeking a Conflicts Manager or Managing Conflicts Counsel (if licensed attorney) to join their fast-paced Risk Management Department. This is a remote-first position with a current focus on candidates located in Minnesota, Texas, Georgia, and Illinois. The role involves managing conflicts searching, identification, and resolution related to new business and lateral intake, ensuring the integrity of the firm’s conflicts data.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all conflicts searching, identification, and resolution of potential ethical, business, and subject matter conflicts related to new business and lateral intake.
  • Oversee managerial responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, training, monitoring, planning, assigning, and directing work of conflicts staff.
  • Appraise performance, handle personnel-related issues, address complaints, and resolve problems within the conflicts team.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor, providing superior service to attorneys, management, and employees.
  • Coach team members to meet business goals and support their professional development through training and performance evaluations.
  • Involve team members in collaborative decision-making processes.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement new business and lateral intake and conflicts checking processes, procedures, systems, and application updates/modifications.
  • Collaborate with firm management including General Counsel and the Intake Committee to standardize and enforce firm policies and practices.
  • Analyze and resolve complex conflict issues regarding new business openings and lateral onboarding.
  • Manage ongoing maintenance of conflicts data to ensure integrity, including monitoring conflicts forums and annotations.
  • Prepare for, host, and document Intake Committee conference calls and provide assistance as needed.
  • Provide orientation and training for new attorneys and professional staff on conflicts and lateral hire procedures.
  • Document procedures in written and online manuals related to new business intake, lateral clearance, and other department processes.

Requirements

  • For Conflicts Manager: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • For Managing Conflicts Counsel: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active licensure in good standing in the practicing state.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in conflicts or new business intake within a law firm, with expertise in identifying, analyzing, and resolving conflicts of interest.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory or management experience in conflicts or new business intake.
  • Proficiency with automated conflicts databases (e.g., InTapp).
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train attorneys and professional staff at various levels.
  • Strong investigative and analytical skills for complex legal matter analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to work independently, identify issues, and implement solutions.
  • Experience managing team members across different positions and geographic locations.
  • Leadership skills including critical thinking, risk-taking, creativity, and effective delegation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with firm principals, attorneys, and leadership on complex issues.
  • Adaptability to changing responsibilities and circumstances.
