Overview

A leading cloud-based content management and productivity platform for legal professionals is seeking a Manager of Legal Engineering to join their R&D organization. This role focuses on building the discipline of legal engineering by owning the substantive legal quality of AI-driven legal intelligence products. The position involves defining how legal knowledge is structured and evaluated to improve outcomes for legal professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own the structure of legal knowledge across various matter types and practice areas, enhancing products such as Legal Context Graph.
  • Design and implement evaluation frameworks to rigorously assess legal AI outputs, including briefs, analyses, extractions, and agent results.
  • Develop and validate legal skills (structured, executable domain knowledge) that enable AI agents to perform substantive legal tasks accurately.
  • Establish coherent legal taxonomies and semantic layers incorporating practice-area ontologies, document typologies, and matter lifecycles.
  • Hire, lead, and mentor a small team of legal engineers while maintaining a hands-on role.
  • Collaborate across R&D teams including Product, Engineering, and Design to serve as the legal authority for agentic product decisions.
  • Anticipate and address the questions legal professionals would ask about matters, document sets, or AI outputs to ensure product relevance and accuracy.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree with 1–3 years of practicing attorney experience in a law firm or corporate legal department.
  • Continued career involvement in the legal industry through legal technology, knowledge management, innovation leadership, legal data, or related fields.
  • Proficiency with modern AI development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) and familiarity with code repositories; ability to lead a technically fluent team.
  • Strong analytical and methodical mindset focused on provability, structured thinking, taxonomy, and disciplined testing.
  • Deep understanding of legal workflows, including distinctions between litigation, transactions, and document reasoning.
  • Ability to operate independently in a high-autonomy environment, translating strategic direction into execution.
  • Passion for advancing the agentic future of legal work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or evaluating legal AI products within legal technology companies, law firms, or corporate legal departments.
  • Familiarity with legal taxonomies and standards such as FOLIO.
  • Contributions to legal engineering, legal innovation, or legal AI communities through publications, open-source projects, or other involvement.
  • Experience designing evaluation frameworks, benchmark datasets, or quality measurement systems for domain-specific AI.
  • Proven ability to hire and lead small, high-impact technical or hybrid teams.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $190,000 - $210,000, including base salary and variable components if applicable.
