Overview

This full-time role focuses on federal court litigation. Responsibilities include conducting legal research, drafting court documents, managing discovery and motion practice, and representing clients in trials and appeals. The position also involves developing advocacy strategies and coordinating with direct service, policy, and communications teams.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support litigation efforts.
  • Draft pleadings, briefs, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Manage discovery processes, motion practice, and trial preparation.
  • Represent clients in trials and appeals in both state and federal courts.
  • Develop and implement effective advocacy strategies in identified areas of focus.
  • Provide immigration-court level representation in relevant litigation matters, including representing a named plaintiff in a district court action tied to their immigration case.
  • Collaborate with the organization’s direct service, policy, and communications teams to ensure integrated advocacy efforts.
  • Work with pro bono attorneys and other nonprofit organizations to support litigation matters and advance organizational mission and goals.

Requirements

  • Law degree (JD).
  • License to practice law.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the legal field, preferably in federal court practice or immigration law.
  • Applicants with significantly more experience are encouraged to apply; total years of relevant experience will be considered as part of the final salary determination.
  • Fluency in English required.
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly encouraged but not required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated competency in public speaking and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables where limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in federal court practice and/or immigration law.
  • Spanish fluency (strongly encouraged).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $82,000 - $105,000 per year.

Location

Headquartered in Chicago, with offices in Washington, DC, Indiana, and San Diego. (Full-time position.)

Physical Abilities Statement

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Occasionally needs to move about the inside of the office to access filing cabinets and office machinery.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine.
